How to choose music for PMVs (porn music videos)

Half-time genres โ€” the BPM trap

Dubstep, trap, and future bass are written at 140-160 BPM in the DAW, but they feel like 70-80 BPM because the drums play a half-time pattern (kick on beat 1, snare on beat 3). If you try to cut on every beat at 140 BPM, you'll be cutting twice as fast as the music feels โ€” and it'll look frantic and disconnected.

Rule of thumb: for half-time genres, cut on the snare (every other beat). This gives you the natural groove of the track at the perceived tempo.

Frames per beat โ€” the math

If you want frame-perfect sync, use this formula: frames per beat = (FPS ร— 60) รท BPM

When beats land exactly on frame boundaries (like 120 BPM at 30fps = exactly 15 frames), sync is frame-perfect. Odd ratios mean some beats fall between frames โ€” close enough to look synced, but not mathematically exact. If this bothers you, pick a BPM/FPS combination that divides evenly.

Transients are the sharp spikes at the start of percussive sounds โ€” the "crack" of a snare, the "thump" of a kick. They last about 20 milliseconds but they're what beat detection algorithms (and your ears) lock onto. Songs with crisp, prominent transients produce reliable beat markers and clean waveform spikes.
