How to make a PMV - the dead-simple method
Forget the 45-minute YouTube tutorials from 2018. Forget installing Python and FFmpeg. Here's how to make a PMV in 2026 in under 5 minutes.
What you need
- A folder of video clips (your library)
- A song (MP3, FLAC, WAV - anything)
- Onset Engine (there's a free demo - no credit card needed)
The workflow
Import your clips
Drag your clip folder into Onset Engine. It handles any format - MP4, MKV, AVI, WebM, whatever. No need to rename, sort, or pre-cut anything. The more clips you have, the more variety in your final PMV. Onset Engine uses pointer-only ingest, so even massive libraries load instantly.
Drop in a song
Pick any track. The AI analyzes it in about 10 seconds using librosa-based beat detection - mapping beats, identifying drops and breakdowns, understanding the song's energy curve. This is what makes the cuts land perfectly, not just on beats but on the right beats.
Choose your style
Select a preset. Sensual gives you longer clips with smooth crossfades - good for R&B, lo-fi, slow builds. Aggressive fires rapid cuts on every beat - perfect for EDM, trap, dubstep. There are 9 presets total: Standard, Aggressive, Sensual, Raw, Prestige, Trailer, AMV, Hypnosis, and VHS.
Preview and fine-tune
Hit play to see your PMV assembled in real-time. Don't like a specific clip? Use Swap. Want to lock one in a particular spot? Pin it. Want to randomize a section? Re-Roll. These Curator tools let you fine-tune without starting over.
Export
Hit render. A 4-minute PMV at 1080p exports in about 2-3 minutes. That's it. Total time from opening the app to finished video: under 5 minutes.
The old way (for comparison)
Here's what making a PMV used to look like:
- Open Vegas Pro / Premiere / Resolve
- Import all clips manually
- Import the song
- Listen to the song beat by beat, placing markers
- Cut clips to fit between markers
- Adjust every single cut by a few frames to feel right
- Add transitions manually between clips
- Render and watch back - realize some cuts are off
- Fix, re-render, repeat
Time: 2-4 hours for a single 4-minute PMV. With Onset Engine, it's under 5 minutes.
